ABOUT our founder Zuly garcia

Zuly Garcia is a highly skilled Los Angeles-based photographer, art director, producer, and activist with over 10 years of experience. From receiving her first camera at the age of 13 to becoming an industry force, Zuly's journey has been fueled by her commitment to authentically representing diverse communities. Her work reflects the Latine experience in Los Angeles, capturing the beauty of skin tones and communities of color through the lens of culture and storytelling. Wherever there’s culture, Zuly is there, bringing it to life with vivid colors and a deep narrative touch.

In October 2023, Zuly opened Intersect Crenshaw Studios, a CYC wall photo studio in the Jefferson Artist District. The studio is located on the very street where she attended elementary, middle, and high school. Zuly opened the space to bring photography and the arts to her community, a neighborhood facing gentrification. Her goal is to create opportunities for locals to see people from their own community open businesses and reclaim their presence in the area. Through monthly workshops in collaboration with FotoLab, Zuly teaches intro to photography and studio photography, offering creative access to those who didn’t have it growing up, just like her.

Zuly’s career took off with her 2017 project Flores Politicos, which garnered widespread attention and marked the beginning of her rise in the art world. Her work has been featured in publications such as Mic News, NPR USA Latino, Mitú, Fierce by Mitú, Vogue España, Voyage LA Magazine, and Afro-Tech, to name a few.

Drawing upon her background as a Sociology major and alumna of CSULB, Zuly uses her education to explore topics such as race, class, gender, politics, and body positivity. This academic foundation informs her art, which combines vibrant colors, floral elements, and abstract installations into thought-provoking pieces that challenge conventional narratives.

Zuly’s expertise in photography also led to a key role at Google, where she worked for three years as an Image Quality Expert. Hired specifically for her ability to accurately represent skin tones, she was handpicked by the Real Tone team to help develop tools that make cameras more equitable for all skin tones. Her work on Real Tone for the Pixel 6 was critical in ensuring that cameras accurately captured diverse skin tones in all lighting conditions. Zuly played a central role in refining features such as Magic Eraser, Real Tone, Night Sight, Skin Texture, Auto Enhance, and Deep Restore, providing valuable feedback and collaborating with engineers to address complex challenges.

Her creative talents have also led to collaborations with major brands like Google, Vive Cosmetics, Foot Action x Nike, Foot Locker, SLX, Girlfriend, Mitu, and Loquita Bath & Body. Combining her technical expertise with her artistic vision, Zuly’s work continues to push boundaries, capturing the essence of communities and their stories.
